Communities, businesses, and agencies each have cultures and personalities. In part, these reflect the individuals who make up the organization, but each organization also seems to have a life of its own, a driving goal or mythology that organizes its successes and problems. Understanding the drivers that operate in the background of the organization’s work can resolve many problems and conflicts, and unlock enormous amounts of creative energy to fuel the organization’s or community’s development.
I have taught and facilitated at numerous conflict resolution and community-building seminars for as many as 300 people from as many as 35 countries, in locations as diverse as Japan, Slovakia, Switzerland, Oakland, California, and Washington, D.C. I have worked with businesses, government agencies, non-profits, and both geographical and self-selected communities on these same issues. I taught PhD-level Group Dynamics for three years. I have also taught graduate-level classes on Conflict Resolution, Diversity, Gender Issues, and Community Development.
In all of this work, discovering the underlying assumptions that keep us stuck has an immediately freeing effect. Beyond that, accessing our unfiltered intelligence and wisdom provides opportunities and energy for creative solutions to intractable problems, and fuel for new growth.
